- Testing and Curriculum | CAYUGA WILDCATS
Testing and Curriculum Testing State-mandated testing in Texas public schools is designed to measure how well students are learning the knowledge and skills outlined in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), which are the state’s academic standards for each grade level. These tests, commonly called STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness), are given each spring to students in grades 3–8 and certain high school courses. MAP is a tool used nationwide at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year. Unlike the STAAR test, MAP tests measure progress instead of mastery. The test adapts to each child based on how they answer test questions. The goal of the test is not to score 100% of the questions correctly; instead, each child's test becomes a unique experience for them, identifying strengths, areas needing improvement, and ideas for enrichment. The MAP results are useful to teachers as well, allowing them to see where students may have missed important concepts and where they are successful, and make changes to meet their needs. The purpose of these tests is to ensure that students are on track academically and that schools are providing high-quality instruction. Test results help teachers, schools, and families understand areas where students are excelling and where they may need extra support. While testing is only one part of a child’s education, it plays an important role in keeping schools accountable and making sure every child receives a strong education. Kenyetta Jenkins MS/HS Counselor kjenkins@cayugaisd.com Becky Thompson Special Programs Director bthompson@cayugaisd.com Jenni Scheppler Curriculum Director jscheppler@cayugaisd.com STAAR TEST What is STAAR Who is Tested Why are Students Tested More Info What is the STAAR Test The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) is a standardized academic achievement test designed to measure the extent to which a student has learned and is able to apply the defined knowledge and skills in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) at each tested grade, subject, and course. Every STAAR question is directly aligned to the TEKS currently in effect for the grade and subject or course being assessed. STAAR helps to ensure that Texas students are competitive with other students both nationally and internationally. Another important function of STAAR is gauging how well schools and teachers prepare their students academically. In addition, STAAR fulfills the requirements of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, which requires that all students be assessed in specific grades and subjects throughout their academic careers. STAAR is an online assessment in mathematics, reading language arts (RLA), science, and social studies for students in grades 3–8 and high school and online tests in Spanish for students in grades 3–5. Who is Tested Grades 3-8: Take annual tests in reading and mathematics. Science: Tested in grades 5 and 8. Writing: Assessed in grades 4 and 7. Social Studies: Assessed in grade 8 and high school U.S. history. High School: Students take End-of-Course (EOC) assessments in Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, and U.S. History. All students enrolled in Texas public schools and open-enrollment charter schools in grades 3–8 and specific high school courses are required by both federal and state law to participate in STAAR. Why are Students Tested Measure Learning: To assess how well students have learned and can apply state-defined academic skills. Accountability: To determine school and district accountability ratings, which are used to make decisions about support and intervention. Instructional Support: To help teachers identify students who need extra support and inform curriculum choices and intervention strategies. More Information Released Test Questions: Released Test Questions click here Practice Test: For Practice Test click here MAP TEST What is MAP Who is Tested Common Questions More Info What is the MAP Growth Test MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) is a nationally normed, adaptive achievement test. Nationally normed assessments compare your child to other typical students in the same grade, tested at the same point in the school year, across the nation. Norm referenced tests help teachers know what your student knows on the day of the test compared to other students of the same grade level. Teachers use this information to help your student learn tomorrow. An adaptive test is programmed to ask students questions based on their answers. For example, when a student answers a question correctly, the test will ask a more difficult or equally difficult question next. When a student answers a question incorrectly, the test will ask an easier question next. The goal of the test is not to score 100% of the questions correctly; instead, each child's test becomes a unique experience for them, identifying strengths, areas needing improvement, and ideas for enrichment. Who is Tested Cayuga ISD will administer the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress Growth, or MAP Growth, assessments this school year as part of a comprehensive assessment system. NWEA MAP Growth is a nationally normed, standardized achievement test which measures what learners know and informs what they're ready to learn next by using a computer adaptive test that adjusts to the ability and knowledge of the learner. Your child's educator will use the results of the NWEA MAP Growth assessments to better understand your child's individual needs and to help him/her progress in the assessed area. Because the assessment is a growth measure, it can track the growth of the learner between testing events and over multiple years of testing. All learners in grades K-8 will be evaluated using NWEA MAP Growth assessments in math and reading. Grades 3-8 will also take NWEA MAP science assessments. Grades 9-11 will take NWEA MAP English I and II, Biology, Geometry, and Algebra 1. These assessments will be given once at the beginning of the school year, once in the middle of the school year, and once at the end of the school year. For more information about NWEA and the MAP Growth assessments, you can visit the following websites: MAP Growth Family Toolkit Interactive resources to prepare your student Common Questions How do schools and teachers use MAP Growth scores? Teachers can use the scores to identify learning areas that their class should focus on, as well as monitor the growth of individual students. Principals and administrators can use the scores to see the performance and progress of a grade level, school, or the entire district. Can MAP Growth tell me if my child is working at grade level? Yes, but please note that MAP Growth scores are just one data point that teachers use to determine how a student is performing. Please discuss any questions that you have about your child’s performance with their teacher. How often will my child take MAP Growth tests? Most schools give MAP Growth tests to students at the beginning, middle, and end of the school year (in the fall, winter, and spring). Some schools choose to administer tests only twice a year. What are norms? NWEA provides schools with norms by utilizing anonymous data from more than 10 million students around the US. Knowing the top, middle, and bottom scores of all these students combined allows teachers to compare where your child is to other students and help them grow. In addition, NWEA provides comparison data for private, accredited, English-based, international schools using MAP Growth outside the US. Is MAP Growth a standardized test? MAP Growth is administered periodically during the school year. Instead of asking all students the same questions, it adjusts to each child’s performance—giving a more accurate measure of what they know. Teachers also receive results right away, which enables them to react more quickly. What types of questions are on MAP Growth tests? The MAP Growth tests include multiple choice, drag-and-drop, and other types of questions. For sample tests, visit Warmup.NWEA.org . What is a RIT score? When students finish their MAP Growth test, they receive a number called a RIT score for each subject they are tested in: reading, language usage, math, or science. This score represents a student’s achievement level at any given moment and helps measure their academic growth over time. The RIT scale is a stable scale, like feet and inches, that accurately measures student performance, regardless of age, grades, or grade level. Like marking height on a growth chart and being able to see how tall a child is at various points in time, you can also see how much they have grown between tests. More Information For more information about NWEA and the MAP Growth assessments, you can visit the following websites: MAP Growth Family Toolkit Interactive resources to prepare your student TEKS What are TEKS Common Questions What are TEKS TEKS stands for Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, which are the state-mandated curriculum standards for public schools in Texas, from kindergarten through 12th grade. They define what students should know and be able to do in each subject and grade level, ensuring all students have access to a high-quality, standardized education. Purpose: The standards provide a clear roadmap for teaching and learning, detailing the specific knowledge and skills students should acquire by the end of each grade level. Standardization: By establishing a uniform set of learning objectives, the TEKS help ensure that all Texas students have equal opportunities for success, regardless of their background. Assessment: State-mandated standardized tests in Texas measure students' acquisition of the specific knowledge and skills outlined in the TEKS. Structure: Each standard within the TEKS typically includes an introductory statement, knowledge and skill statements, and student expectations. Implementation: The TEKS were implemented starting in the 1990s to provide clear curriculum expectations for educators and ensure students are prepared for college and careers. Scope: The TEKS cover all major subjects, including English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and more. Common Questions Where can I look up TEKS? The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) is a standardized test administered by the College Board and is now digital. It prepares you for the SAT and serves as your entrance exam for the prestigious National Merit Scholarships. PSAT 8/9 The PSAT 8/9 is for 8th and 9th graders and lasts 2 hours and 25 minutes. It covers Reading and Writing (55 min, 42 questions), Writing & Language (30 min, 40 questions), and Math (60 min, 38 questions). Schools can offer this year’s test during several windows from September to April. PSAT 10 The PSAT 10 is for sophomores and is slightly longer at 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Reading section (60 min, 47 questions), Writing & Language (35 min, 44 questions), and Math sections (70 min, 48 questions) are the same as those in the actual PSAT/NMSQT test. The new digital PSAT/NMSQT takes 2 hours and 14 minutes. The test has two sections: Reading and Writing (64 minutes, 54 questions), and Math (70 minutes, 44 questions). The Reading and Writing section is divided into two modules with questions covering four categories: Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions, and Expression of Ideas. Math questions include four areas of content: Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. Some questions require a calculator, while other questions are better solved without a calculator. The PSAT/NMSQT is the qualifying test for junior students to enter the National Merit Scholarship competition. To win, students must take the PSAT/NMSQT in the fall of Junior year. For 2023, students can take the PSAT/NMSQT on a date (determined by the school) between October 2 and 31. Home-Schooled Student Testing Information Under Texas state law, homeschooled students are allowed the same access to PSAT testing as public school students, and must be charged the same testing fee as district students. According to the Texas Education Code, Section 29.916: Sec. 29.916. HOME-SCHOOLED STUDENT MERIT SCHOLARSHIP AND ADVANCED PLACEMENT TESTING. (a) In this section: (1) "Home-schooled student" means a student who predominantly receives instruction in a general elementary or secondary education program that is provided by the parent, or a person standing in parental authority, in or through the child's home. (2) "PSAT/NMSQT" means the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test sponsored by the College Board and Educational Testing Service and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. (b) A school district shall permit a home-schooled student entitled under Section 25.001 to attend public school in the district to participate in an administration of the PSAT/NMSQT or a college advanced placement test offered by the district. A school district shall require a home-schooled student to pay the same fee to participate in a test under this subsection that a student enrolled in the district is required to pay.
